Frequently Asked Questions

How does online counselling work?

I usually work on MS Teams and will send you a link for regular counselling sessions. You can choose where you are for your counselling, the comfort of your home or outside in a private space – but make sure you feel safe, comfortable and have a confidential spot, free from interruptions.

I will ask you to complete a short questionnaire in advance of the first session. In our first session we will talk about how we work together (our contract), I will ask you for some information about you, why you have chosen to seek help now, and your expectations. Our first session is usually about getting to know each other…not too deep. In further sessions we will work on your therapy goals. This may include thinking about events from your childhood, and how they impact on you now.

Usually it is best for sessions to be held weekly, but I am happy to be flexible if you would prefer to make a different arrangement to fit in with your life. Most people find they notice changes after 6 – 12 sessions – however as we are all different, the period of time for counselling varies. Some clients want long term counselling, and some may have shorter term needs, however it’s not a “quick fix” so it may take time to find the right therapist, at the right time of your life.

How do I make an appointment?

You can either book an appointment for a counselling session with me by email, confirmed with payment in advance, and/or arrange a short introductory phone call if you have any questions before starting therapy. I will send you a contract before the first session.

Sessions are charged at £45 per 50-minute session, to be paid in advance by bank transfer.

What sort of counselling do you offer?

I offer Transactional Analysis (TA) counselling, a widely recognised form of modern psychology developed by Eric Berne.  TA is designed to promote personal growth and change. It is considered a fundamental therapy for well-being and for helping individuals to reach their full potential in all aspects of life. As well as listening to you, I will ask you questions and sometimes help you identify unconscious thoughts, feelings and beliefs from the past, that impact on you today.

What is kept confidential? Where is your Privacy notice?

It is my intention that the contents of our therapy are kept confidential. It is an important part of the therapy process that you feel able to discuss anything you need without fear of recrimination. However, this needs to be balanced with my ethical requirement to protect people from serious harm. There may be times when the information you disclose is of such gravity that confidentiality cannot be maintained. In such a situation I would always try to discuss this with you before taking any further action.

It is good practice to make audio recordings of our sessions: I can play them back to reflect on what we have discussed, and it means I can pay full attention to what you are saying in the sessions. I may also play short 5-minute extracts to my clinical supervisor for quality / training purposes. I will only make recordings with your permission and they will be stored securely and deleted at the earliest possible time.

Please also note that I may discuss our work together in supervision, but that you will remain anonymous to my supervisor/tutor. Please be aware I have a legal responsibility to inform the police if I believe you are involved in money laundering or acts of terrorism.
